Navigating Campus

Preferred Name Policy

The Preferred Name policy at Washington University in St. Louis lets students at the Danforth Campus change their names in most university information systems without pursuing a legal name change. By allowing students to use a preferred name, the university hopes to give students an empowering, safe and nondiscriminatory university experience. Reasons for name changes may include transgender or gender nonconforming identities, international students or other students who wish to adopt an English language name, students known by names that are different from their legal names, or students who have popular names who wish to use a different one.

Washington University in St. Louis recognizes that this policy has a high impact on some trans* students’ safety and experience in their identities as they navigate campus. Further, this policy aims to build affirming environments where trans* students can consistently thrive with and among administrators, staff, faculty, and peers.

Please visit the Registrar’s page for more information about the Preferred Name policy. For more detailed information about how and where a student can input a preferred name, how and where preferred names will display, who has access to preferred names and names of record, and a detailed list of frequently asked questions, please visit the Preferred Name policy Student Information site.
